FORT COOPER DAYS

Another much anticipated experience in Citrus County is the annual Fort Cooper Days celebration where thrilling reenactments illustrate the battles of the Second Seminole Indian War.

The Fort was built in 1836 near the edge of Lake Holathlikaha to protect the sick and wounded left behind while thte rest of the army made their way to what is now Tampa. Things didn't go according to plan when the Seminoles, led by Osceola and other Chiefs discovered Major Cooper and his men. The battle raged for 16 days with as many as 500 warriors storming the fort. The troops in the fort were saved when a relief column returned to support them.

We couldn't have had a more beautiful spring day to enjoy Fort Cooper and to witness the reenactment of the Seminole indian attack on the fort which was manned only by a battalion of volunteers plus an artillery company of a few army regulars with Major Cooper in charge. The fort is named in his honor for his bravery and vigilant leadership during the 16 day siege. The Battalion sustained about 20 men wounded

and one man lost

Fort Cooper State Park offers a spot for relaxing, hiking, nature study and learning about history.

The park offers more than five miles of self-guided trails with excellent bird and wildlife viewing.

Park visitors can enjoy the picnic facilities and playground under the hardwood hammock near the lake.

A covered pavilion and BBQ pit may be rented.

For the annual Fort Cooper Day celebration there are live history demonstrations throughout the day and exhibits, crafts along with merchandise and food vendors. There is also live entertainment

provided by Tom Sjoberg at the Pavillion.

I hope that if you are in Citrus County during Fort Cooper Days that you will mark your calendar to attend this authentic reenactment

of an event that took place in this location. I

was especially struck by the beauty of the park realizing that this is Old Florida.

The parks diverse natural areas provide a refuge for many plants and animals. The inland woods feature hammocks of hickory, oak, magnolia and sweet gum. Beyond is the sandhill community, a dry, open forest of long leaf pines and turkey oaks.

Sightings of deer, turkey, opossum and bobcat are common. Owls, herons and cardinals are frequently seen at the park

The 160 acre, crystal clear Lake Holathlkaha is popular for fishing and swimming.

Paddleboat and canoe rentals are available but private boats are not allowed on the lake. A volleyball court and a horseshoe pit are available.

As part of the Great florida Birding trail, the park offers more than five miles of self-guided trails with excellent bird and wildlife viewing. a trail extension connects the park to the multi-use paved Withlacoochee State Trail that runs along U.S. 41 and the eastern border of the park.
Visitors can enjoy the picnic facilities and playground under the hardwood hammock near the lake.

The Lake Lodge is an ideal setting for small gatherings. this rustic building with air conditioning, heat and a fireplace can accommodate up to 50 people. A small kitchen can also be rented.
You can see that there is a lot more to Fort Cooper than the reenactment ceremonies
and I would encourage you to consider this park for a Citrus County Experience any time of the year.

Of course, Jan's Highland Guest House is available all year round. Please
call for my special spring and summer rates.
