THE TASTE OF INVERNESS

Another annual summer event in Citrus County is the "Taste of Inverness."  This  year's theme was "Main Course on Main Street.  It's a night of food and wine sampling, artwork and music.  Started in
2006 with the opening of the Inverness Government Center, the Taste of Inverness has returned as a stand alone event, featuring local restaurants serving up everything from Cubans and pasta to ice cream and pizza.

More than 500 people attend this fundraiser for the Covenant children's Home, enjoying food, bidding on silent auction items and listening to the performers on stage.

Eleven local restaurants presented a sampling of their best foods at this "elegant affair of arts, music, food and wine under the stars."

Tickets are $20 and can be purchased at various businesses around the County or the night of the event.  There are winners in various categories of best appetizer, best entree, best dessert and best presentation.

Restaurants are set  up in one tent outside the Inverness Government Center and wine tasting is in another tent.  Live music performs on a stage in the food tent where seats are set up for relaxing, eating and listening.

With an art show and swing and jazz style music,m there is a "sophisticated kind of '20's and '30's vibe.

The silent auction and car show is in progress throughout the evening.

When planning your visit to Citrus County this summer, be sure to check on the dates and times for the Taste of Inverness and enjoy one of our most popular annual summer events.

YULEE SUGAR MILL RUINS

This site was once part of a thriving sugar plantation owned by David Levy Yulee. Yulee was a member of the Territorial Legislative Council, and served in the U.S. House of Representatives and U.S. Senate after Florida statehood. The park contains the remnants of the once-thriving 5,100-acre sugar plantation: a forty-foot limestone masonry chimney, iron gears, and a cane press. The steam-driven mill operated from 1851 to 1864 and served as a supplier of sugar products for southern troops during the Civil War.

During the month of June The Florida Public Archaeology Network, the Yulee Sugar Mill Ruins Historic State Park, the Homosassa Civic Club, the Old Homosassa Villages Association, Gemini Graphics, The Old Printing Museum and Museum Café present “Historic Homosassa — Home of David Levy Yulee,” a fun-filled day of history, heritage and music from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.  at the Yulee Sugar Mill Ruins Historic State Park and the adjacent Old Printing Press Museum/Museum Café along County Road 490 (Yulee Road), Homosassa.

The Yulee Sugar Mill Ruins include the limestone boiler and chimney from Yulee’s 1849 sugar cane mill, part of his coastal plantation at Margarita. The mill chimney is one of the oldest standing structures on Florida’s west coast and the oldest in Citrus County.
The event celebrates the history of David Levy Yulee, Florida’s first U.S. senator, and the heritage of the community of Homosassa. Yulee was also responsible for the first cross-peninsular railroad, connecting Fernandina on the Atlantic coast with Cedar Key on the Gulf. Situated along the Homosassa River, Yulee’s 5,000-acre plantation, Margarita, was burned during the Civil War, but his cane mill was never captured.
Highlights of the unique heritage of Homosassa are on display and special musical guests play throughout the day, making music history under the grand oaks of the Old Printing Museum’s open air sound stage.
Re-enactors dressed in period costumes, park interpreters and guided tours of the mill ruins take place throughout the day. Visitors can even see how cane syrup was made on a 19th-century cane-grinding mill.
The Florida Public Archaeology Network is a statewide program administered by the University of West Florida in cooperation with the Florida Department of State, Division of Historical Resources. The Central Regional Center of FPAN, located in Crystal River, is hosted by the University of South Florida and serves as headquarters for public participation in archaeology and historic preservation in our area.
When visiting Citrus County in June,  you may want to contact Richard Estabrook at 795-0208 to see what events are planned at the park.
This blog has written an earlier article about the Printers Museum at this location.  It has a sweet little Cuban Cafe that you may enjoy while visiting the park.

MORE SUMMER FUN IN CITRUS COUNTY

The Crystal River Preserve State Park has two interesting programs that you may want to include in  your schedule while visiting Citrus County and staying and Jans Highland Guest House.

On Monday, Wednesday and Friday at 10:30 am and 1:30 pm the park ranger or park volunteer offer an informative and enjoyable 1 1/2 hr narrated tour aboard "The Monroe", a covered 24 passenger tour boat.

This interpretive tour leaves the Crystal River Preserve State Park Visitor Center dock and ventures to the mouth of the Crystal River.  Enjoy the beautiful scenery and wildlife while learning why and how the native people came to live along the river.

Cost for the tour is $10 and the tickets go on sale in the Preserve Visitor Center one hour prior to departure so plan to arrive no less than 15 minutes prior to departure.  Restrooms are available in the visitors Center; NOT on the boat.

The two hour scenic tour aboard the park's 24 passenger, covered tour boat departs the Crystal River Preserve State Park Visitor Center dock approximately 30 minutes before sunset.

Since the time that the sun sets changes as the days get longer, contact the park for specific departure times.

The boat cruises down the river to the Gulf of Mexico as visitors relax with some humor, river lore and photo opportunities.

Refreshments are served while the sun sets gently in the west.  It's a wonderful way to relax with friends on a Friday night and experience the beauty of Crystal River Preserve at dusk.

Tickets must be obtained in advance at the Preserve Visitor Center, and are available for a $15 donation to the Friends of Crystal River State Parks Inc.

Passengers must arrive no less than 15 minutes prior to departure.

There was live Florida music, educational demonstrations, a touch tank, recycling and water quality tips, native plant sales, a flint knapper, wildlife talks, food booth, some excellent Earth Day t-shirts.

For a "suggested" $5 donation, many enjoyedd the 30 minute eagle nest boat tours that were offered throughout the day
For the kids there was an earth-centered crafts and games area with coloring contest forms.  Contest entruies are judged and priuzes awarded in three age groups.

All who attended agreed that going to the Earth Day Celebration was a great way to spend a day and that April the perfect time of year to enjoy this function.

Old Printing Museum & Museum Cafe

Sometime when you are in Olde Homossassa at the Blues or Seafood Festival or visiting the many restaurants in the area, take a few moments to stop by the Old Mill House Gallery and Printing Museum located on the site of the Sugar Mill ruins.

This little printers museum has a remarkable collection of the tools of that trade in a much earlier time.

If you call ahead, Jim Anderson will host a very educational tour through the museum, sharing his knowledge of his marvelous collection of antique printing presses and allow you to experience the art of making note cards and  pictures using some of these ancient tools.

After the tour, be sure to have lunch at the charming Cuban cafe in the same building.  Cuban Sandwiches and Black beans with yellow rice are among the many favorite items on the menu.  Good hot cuban coffee and Guava Pastry will complete a most delectable meal.
